Course Description

The HITECH Act made dramatic changes in the manner in which the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act applies to advisers and consultants, like CPAs with healthcare clients, such as physician practices. Effective September 2013, the same data security requirements, confidentiality rules and civil and criminal penalties apply to CPAs as apply to physicians! This presents serious challenges to even routine bookkeeping services and especially so for firms engaged in giving advice about medical billing procedures.

In this session you will learn:

• The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act or HIPPA - What is it?
• Key Terms
• Protected Health Information (PHI)
• PHI Elements and Examples
• PHI Minimum Necessary
• PHI Data Security Requirements
• Who are Business Associates?
• The Business Associates Agreement: Hidden Liability Risks in a Mandated Document
• Civil and Criminal Penalties

HIPPA: What You Need to Know if You Have Clients in the Healthcare Industry is a one-hour webinar.
